SPPA activities

Since its foundation in 1995, the SPPA has run a number of events in Scottish universities. A number of these were graduate conferences that welcomed postgraduate speakers from all universities within and without Scotland. Since March 2004, this conference programme has been supplemented with a twice-yearly, more informal seminar day at which papers and responses are given by current research students at Scottish universities, giving such students the opportunity to meet and discuss their work with each other. The SPPA also maintains a mailing list that is used to announce news, events, calls for papers, new resources, etc and enables members to communicate with each other. News of interest to SPPA members is also published on this website. In addition, we provide a point of contact for anyone with a query about postgraduate-level study of philosophy in Scotland, having contacts within all Scottish universities that offer postgraduate programmes. Support

The SPPA gratefully acknowledges the generous support of: the Scots Philosophical Club, which provides an annual grant to the SPPA that covers our running costs and makes a significant contibution to the cost of our events; the philosophy departments in Scotland for provision of the venues and additional support for our events; the University of Stirling for hosting this website; the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) for hosting the SPPA mailing list; and all other organizations that have provided support for specific SPPA events (these organizations are acknowledged on the web page for the event). Governance

The SPPA is run according to a constitution agreed by its members, by a committee comprising a President, Secretary and Treasurer elected by the membership and an SPPA Representative for each university elected by postgraduate students within that institution. Details of the current committee can be found on the contact page. On this site, you can also find details of the responsibilities of each post and of past officers of the SPPA. Annual meetings of the SPPA are held at one of the seminar days, at which any necessary elections to the committee are held and other business requiring consultation with SPPA members conducted. Minutes of SPPA meetings since December 2003 can be found on this website. Annual reports of the SPPA, including the planned activities for the following year, will be published on this website in future.
