Kehaulani Kauanui with Tonya Gonnella Frichner (Onondaga Nation, Snipe Clan), the North American Representative of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, on "Indigenous Politics." Topics for discussion focus on the politics of indigenous self-determination under international law, the distinction between minorities and Indigenous peoples, and the decades-long struggle to draft and pass the U.N. Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, as well as the opposition by New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and the United States (the only four States that voted against it). [Original air-date: 10-30-07] NativeWeb has moved to a new and improved web server. As part of our upgrades to content and materials, which we call NativeWeb 2.0, we maintain several new ideas for our community of participants and viewers: NativeWiki - you've heard of Wikipedia? NativeWeb is exploring ways to make our site more interactive, so you can contribute original sites and materials. Blogs - you've heard of them, you may even write one. We'd like to offer space for native and indigenous peoples to post blogs on our site. Never saw what you wanted on our website? How about participating in a poll to tell us what you want? An announcement list with occasional messages of interest to Native peoples: Name: E-mail:   People and Places More People and Places Legal battle over forest is victory for Paraguayan IndiansAyoreo people in Bolivia and Paraguay(CNN) -- A small tribe of Indians in Paraguay who have had virtually no contact with the outside world won a legal battle this week when rights groups stopped a Brazilian company from continuing to bulldoze the forest to clear land for cattle ranches. The legal battle is being waged by local groups such as GAT, an acronym in Spanish for People, Environment and Territory. The activist groups have undertaken the fight without the knowledge of the Totobiegosode."This sends a very significant signal," said Jonathan Mazower, campaign coordinator for Survival International. "Until now, the ranchers and the landowners have really had it all their own way. They are very politically powerful and well-funded. ... This may be a sign that the government is starting to get a grip on the situation."   Looking for specific native information? Search our large database. Know of materials we don't list?
