[ Contact info ]Survivor Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing the needs of inter and trans survivors of domestic and ual violence through caring action, education and expanding access to resources and to opportunities for action. Since 1997, we have provided presentations, workshops, consultation, materials, information and referrals to many anti-violence organizations and universities across the country, as well as gathered information about issues faced by inter and trans survivors of domestic and ual violence.Our PhilosophiesMulti-Issue Anti-Oppression WorkWhile we are specialized in addressing the unique issues of inter and trans survivors of domestic and ual violence, Survivor Project is committed to resisting and confronting all violence and oppression (such as racism, ism, classism, ableism, etc.) at every level, including and especially within our own organization. We consider ourselves not just an inter and trans organization, but a multi-issue economic and social justice organization specialized in inter and trans survivors' issues. We expect our staff and board members to continuously educate themselves and each other on various social justice issues, and work in coalition with a number of progressive organizations at both local and national levels.Survivor-Positive OrganizingAs survivor-activists, we believe that providing opportunities for survivors to engage in anti-violence activism is as much part of our mission as providing them services. Unfortunately, many anti-violence organizations (e.g. domestic violence shelters) view survivor-activists as a liability unless they can constantly act as if they have completely healed from their abuse. Survivor Project, on the other hand, is committed to accommodating unique issues survivors face (e.g. triggers, flashbacks, and dissociation) just as we do with people with physical disabilities by working with survivor-activists to develop individualized strategies that would minimize risks and maximize safety and comfort for all. In addition, our volunteers are welcome to utilize our services as clients while off duty.Empowerment & Harm ReductionWe honor all survivors' wisdoms as well as their own unique ways of coping, even when we feel that the particular method of coping employed by a survivor may be harmful to her or him in some way (e.g. drug and alcohol use, self-injury, staying with the abuser, survival ). We believe that our job is to listen and to support whatever ways survivors cope. When we feel that the survivor is in a dangerous situation, we will offer to assist her or him develop a "safety plan" in order to reduce risks or harm. We will offer information and referrals for alternatives only when it is requested by the survivor.
