New Agers and native wisdom

A dialog on the NATCHAT list, February 1995

From: Nora Bunce, Eastern CherokeeDate: 21 February 1995I would like to offer my views on this issue of Native Americanbeliefs and New Age beliefs. I am a Cherokee woman, my Mother was NoraEmory, the daughter of Sarah Willis, who's mother was a member of theWolf clan of the Eastern Cherokee. What my grandmother taught me aboutthe beliefs of the people are as opposite from the New age beliefs asany one can get. Because the differences between the two systems, there is no way that there can be any merging of the two without onegroup giving up their basic fundamental beliefs and adopting theothers beliefs. I am not willing to give up what my Grandmother taughtme. NO! THE NEW AGERS DO NOT DO A GOOD JOB OF REPRESENTING THE BELIEFSOF MY PEOPLE. They steal the cerimonies and parts of the beliefs thatthey choose without permission, without knowlege. They bastardize themand re-package them for sell to the public either for money orcredibility. And I am so very sick and tired of it. What the new agersdo to our beliefs is another form of genocide that my people have hadto endure.Date: Sun, 26 Feb 1995 13:16:59 -0900From: FTNEB@VMS.AURORA.ALASKA.EDUTo: johnsorl@colorado.eduHello Robert,Yes, you have my permission to repost my commentary. There are somevery basic philosophical differences between the New Age beliefsystem and the beliefs of my Grandmothers. The main one being the belief held by my Grandmothers that we have aCreator, that exists outside of ourselves. We are a small butsignificant part of the creation and we are accountable to Creator forhow we behave toward others, Our Mother Earth and all of herchildren. As a young person (42) I have to give an account to myGrandmother, the people, and Creator for the way in which I treat mychildren. I am not my own god. New agers do not want to be heldaccountable to the Native community for their behavior. The meanings of our ceremonies are lost on the new agers, they can notsee beyond the rituals. When the white race killed theircreator and decided that they would teach their children that theyevolved from something without intellect, without feeling, without meaning, it left an emptiness in the children. Today thosechildren as s look around for all sorts of things to fill thatvoid. Our ceremonies are but one thing that these people have grabbedin order to fill that emptiness. But because their basic beliefs willnot allow them to be accountable to a Creator, they do not look forthe meaning behind the ceremonies, and they only pick and chooseportions which serves their own agendas. There is no one Indian religion, as the new agers would have youbelieve, our religions are community based, and the practices reflectthe individual characteristics of the community and theindividuals. True medicine people do not sell their knowledge forprofit, it is to be shared freely with the people. As a native woman Ilook to my grandmothers for the wisdon I need, I do not go looking totake someones else's religion. As a native woman, I accept the painthat comes as a result of genocide and I will spend the rest of mylife fighting the devestating effects of genocide on our children. Newagers do not want to accept this part of what it is to be native. Theydo not want anything to upset their romanticized idea of what it is tobe native.Granted, not all Native Americans adhere to the teachings of ourGrandfathers and Grandmothers. They have given up the old principlesfor those of the Europeans. I believe that this is why our peopleself-destruct through alcohol, suicide, drugs, and other ways. But Iam grateful that we are beginning to look to these issues. Our Eldersare waking up and the heart is coming back into our people. We aregaining control of our own lives again, and at the heart of this newlife is Creator, our children, and our Elders.Native people do not have the same religious freedom that White peoplehave. New agers have the power to make themselves heard by the peopleof their culture. They give a wrong representation of our beliefs, they trivialize our practices destroying their power. As a teacher Isee the beliefs of my people minimized and misrepresented in theclassroom, and our children that are forced to attend the schools aremade to feel shame for the beliefs of their grandparents and shame forwho they are. The goal of the dominate culture has been and still isdestruction of the native by assimilation. This policy has not changedsince the beginning of the invasion, it has gone underground into theeducational curriculum and legal legislation that abrogate treatyrites (the main issue of treaty rites is the natives' right to live onthe land). At the heart of our survival has been our spiritual beliefs. The newagers carry out their own form of genocide against our people bystealing our spiritual beliefs, minimizing them, bastardizing them anddestroying the power that is in them. These are some of my own thoughts.Thank you for asking a native. There are others who can speak to this issue much clearer than I, andwith much more knowledge. I encourage you to seek those people out ifyou want a true representation of how native people view the newagers.Creator bless you.Nora BunceDate: Sun, 26 Feb 1995 16:37:37 -0700From: Robert Johnson <johnsorl@COLORADO.EDU>To: Multiple recipients of list ANTHRO-L <ANTHRO-L@UBVM.CC.BUFFALO.EDU>There has been a question arise concerning new age beliefs and theirrelation to Native American spirituality. Many in anthropologyand archaeology deny or rationalize the continuing injustice of thecultural appropriation of Native American heritage. Many justify theirappropriation by appeals to science's perquisites, or bydenying the legitimacy of impact on contemporary Native Americans whohold to their traditional beliefs.Much of anthropological ethnography traditionally has been akin to NewAge appropriation in that both can only operate without considerationof the spiritual impact of appropriation on Native American culturesand peoples. These commentaries by Nora Bunce present a challenge to therationalizations for the continuing appropriation of Native Americancultural heritage by American anthropology and archaeology.Native America is not a vanishing people and culture, nor is itscultural heritage that of the dead.
